DENSO is one of the largest auto parts suppliers in the world. Established globally in 1949, the Fortune 500 company designs components and systems for car manufacturers around the world. DENSO’s Tennessee facilities serve as a North American base, producing electronics and safety equipment for electric, hybrid, and gasoline-powered vehicles. As a result, the company stores millions of files related to every location’s assembly process, campus operations, and historical archives.
Hardware
The cases included three Network-Attached Storage (NAS) and one Direct-Attached Storage (DAS) units in RAID 5 configurations. Each device consisted of four WD Red hard disk drives (HDDs). The DAS was a G-RAID with six HGST Ultrastar hard drives. Combined, the arrays contained eighteen HDDs and stored over 35 TB of data.
Cause of Data Loss
DENSO encountered multiple RAID 5 failures in a short period of time. The disks within the DAS enclosure experienced mechanical failures, a lost RAID configuration, and encryption issues. The NAS devices suffered Service Area damage and other logical errors that caused the RAID setup to disappear. These failures led to DENSO being unable to access their critical data.
Data Recovery
To confront hardware failure, our specialists performed hard drive repair on all malfunctioned disks. The volumes also had logical damage and encryption issues that prevented RAID reconstruction through standard methods.
We repaired all failed hard drives within the units and made bit-by-bit clones of the original devices. This approach preserved DENSO’s important data throughout the process. Next, we needed to determine the lost configuration of the RAID 5 volumes. Our engineers analyzed each drive's metadata to determine the array's file system geometry. We could reconstruct the data structures once we established the disk order, block size, stripe width, and other attributes. After rebuilding the RAID, our technicians extracted DENSO’s stored data and transferred it to secure storage media.
Outcome
Our experts used advanced tools and techniques to retrieve 152,646,450 files for DENSO following several RAID 5 failures. We recovered 36.9 TB from the failed systems. These figures amounted to 99.9% of stored data. The nearly full recovery of documents, photos, and videos within DENSO’s preferred timeline highlights our technical expertise.
“We had nearly given up hope of ever recovering 35 years of collected data from our RAID. Then we found Secure Data Recovery. Their skill and professionalism put us at ease immediately, and we can’t thank the team enough for retrieving such vital information,” said David Lazar, Regional Communications Lead at DENSO.
We offer proven RAID recovery solutions when catastrophic failure happens. Whether you are a Fortune 500 company, small business, or content creator, our team can recover data from any RAID. DENSO trusted us when they needed results. And you can, too.
