Bio-Pharma Firm Loses Critical Backup Files

Bio-Pharma Firm Loses Critical Backup Files

Catastrophic data loss can often happen because of circumstances that are out of our control. Power surges, mechanical failures, even natural disasters can all cause severe data loss. But on some occasions, our own actions can lead to devastating consequences. This was the case recently when a bio-pharmaceuticals corporation accidentally deleted important backup files.

Lumos Pharma, an Iowa-based company that specializes in the development of new treatments for rare diseases, uses a Dell PE R710 12-disk PowerEdge server running Hyper-V and connected via iSCSI. A server outage recently destroyed a critical database backup file. In the aftermath of the downed server, another database backup was accidentally deleted.

Finding the Right Data Recovery Provider

The company initially attempted an in-house software recovery. When this failed to restore access to the missing files, Lumos contacted an outside professional data recovery service but with unsatisfactory results. Given the complexity of the data loss, Lumos Pharma contacted Secure Data Recovery Services through one of our local partners in Iowa.

Our data recovery engineers generally advise against in-house recovery attempts, as these can sometimes cause additional damage to a failed RAID server and make a full recovery harder to achieve. After receiving the RAID’s Seagate hard drives in our data recovery center, our expert technicians conducted a full diagnostic to determine the extent of the damage and the scope of work required to successfully restore the company’s critical scientific research.

Custom Recovery

The diagnostic analysis uncovered substantial file system-level corruption that would require manual repairs. A custom data recovery solution also had to be developed from scratch to restore the accidentally deleted data from the Seagate drives. Our research and development team obtained file samples matching the lost data set and performed a manual carve for target data relying on the hexadecimal coding of the provided samples.

Next, our engineers identified the target SQL databases. They successfully extracted these files manually using custom utilities designed specifically to meet the needs of this data recovery case. After correcting all damage to these files, all available user data was successfully extracted to our secure storage servers.

Your Trusted Partner

Recovering deleted data from virtual drives requires considerable effort and custom-designed tools. Secure Data Recovery Services has often succeeded where other professional data recovery providers have fallen short. Never give up on a successful recovery, even if your initial attempts don’t give you the expected results.

Our data recovery engineers successfully restored Lumos Pharma’s lost database files, amounting to 723 GB of data. The extracted files were transferred to a FIPS-validated and hardware-encrypted SecureDrive KP 1 TB portable storage device, giving the restored data the highest level of security during return shipment.
