SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD Not Detected

A common data loss scenario we have seen in recent months involves a firmware bug in SanDisk storage devices. Some users of the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSDs have experienced issues with corrupt file systems and unrecognized drives. The corruption seems to occur in 2 TB and 4 TB SanDisk Extreme and SanDisk Extreme Pro Portable SSDs released in 2023. Secure Data Recovery explains why SanDisk Extreme Portable SSDs are not detected and presents a solution.

SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD Firmware Update

Since 2023, users have reported sudden data loss with 2 TB and 4 TB SanDisk Extreme Portable SSDs. The problem with the solid-state drives seems limited to units released in 2023. The 4 TB external SSDs are the most affected model.

From the cases we have seen, the firmware bug appears to scramble allocation metadata. Without allocation metadata, the device cannot manage the distribution of data between storage cells. As a result, files start to disappear, forcing some users to consider data recovery options.

Note: SanDisk released a firmware update for affected models in 2023, but it was not installed to all devices. The latest version of the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD, introduced in 2025 with USB4, does not appear to have any firmware issues.

SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD Recovery Software

There is an option to recover data from a SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD for those that need immediate assistance.

Our proprietary data recovery software can successfully restore lost files in most cases.

To retrieve data from a corrupted SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD:

  1. Download SecureRecovery for Windows or SecureRecovery for Mac
  2. Select the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD that contains lost data.
  3. Select Quick File Search or Full Scan.
  4. Choose the relevant file, folder, or subfolder (if applicable).
  5. Select the file from the list on the right.
  6. Click … to select the output folder for recovered files. Do not choose the same external drive.
  7. Click Recover in the bottom-right corner of the software. A status update will appear if successful.
  8. Click Finish to save the recovered files in the output folder.

You can purchase a full license if the software detects your missing files.

The software detects traces of scrambled metadata and file indexes. Once located, it pieces the information together and retrieves the data. Sometimes the parent folder structure is lost in the process. However, the files inside them are unaffected. Most subfolders remain intact. Recovered files from missing directories are assigned to a Lost and Found folder.

In our experience, the software has delivered full or near-complete recoveries.
