Creating a Backup Strategy for Mobile Devices

Mobile devices are prone to failure like any other computer and regular backups should be maintained

The world of data storage is changing, but many Americans are not developing appropriate backup strategies to meet these changes.

Smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices have expanded the way that we use data, but these devices are just as susceptible to failure similar to computer hard disk corruption and other traditional storage media failures. To avoid serious data loss, you should keep a consistent backup strategy for any device that you use to store important information. Here are a few tips for building an effective and secure mobile backup strategy.

Make Backups Automated

Data loss is a constant danger for mobile devices. You can easily lose access to your calendars, contacts and other important files in a fraction of a second, and you need to be prepared for that possibility.

The best way to stay safe is to use automatic backup programs. Devices like the iPhone have optional cloud services built in, and mobile users who take advantage of these services greatly limit their chances of losing data. Cloud services are excellent for reliable data storage, as your files exist on a remote server. If you lose your computer and your mobile device at the same time, you will still have access to your data.

You can also set devices to automatically backup important files every time that you are in range of your home's Wi-Fi network. Most devices support this functionality, although you may need to download a third-party app on some operating systems.

In any case, it is important to make your backups automatic and to keep at least two copies of your most important files in addition to the original data. While you might remember to back up your data every few days, most mobile users will eventually forget to practice regular backups. This will lead to a potentially serious data loss event when the mobile device breaks.

Pay Attention to Error Messages

If your mobile device fails to complete a backup, you will usually see an error message on the device's screen or on your computer. Unfortunately, many mobile users skip past these screens without reading them or assume that partial backups are sufficient.

Additionally, mobile devices may exhibit error symptoms in the weeks leading up to a flash media failure. For instance, apps may run slowly or require re-installation. Some mobile problems can be attributed to software errors, overloaded memory or operating system corruption, but you should always pay attention to your device and create a backup if you notice markedly different performance.

Keep Your Devices Secure

Security is always an important factor for mobile devices. Look into apps that allow you to remotely lock your phone or tablet if it is lost. This will prevent your data from falling into the wrong hands; some apps even send the GPS location of your smartphone to your computer.

Always keep your devices password protected. This is particularly important for devices used for business; in a recent study from the Ponemon Institute, 55 percent of survey respondents said that they were not aware of their business's mobile data security policy.

If you cannot access data on a damaged mobile device, do not run software on the device or make any attempt to fix physical issues. Turn the device off immediately and contact a qualified data recovery company.
