IBM 3490 Tape Data Recovery Services
Secure Data Recovery Services offers media repair, data transfer and data recovery services for all IBM cartridges including the 3490 series.
As an industry leader in tape data recovery, we regularly treat all IBM cartridges including the 3490 format.
The 3490 tape cartridge was part of the IBM 3480 family, a series of data cartridge formats renowned for their fast data transfer speeds and high storage capacities. Materially similar to 3480 media, the 3490E and 3490 IDRC tapes had twice as many tracks to allow for higher storage capacities. The 3490E could hold a native 800 megabytes of data, while the 3490E IDRC offered a native storage capacity of 2400 megabytes.
All 3490 formats could transfer data at speeds of up to 20 megabytes per second, and 3490 tape drives were fully backwards compatible. These features made 3490E an excellent option for archival storage, but as with any magnetic storage format, 3490 tape cartridges can lose data due to improper storage conditions, physical impact or corruption.
Some common causes of data loss on IBM 3490 cartridges include:
- Oxide Loss and Tape Component Decay
- Water and Humidity Damage
- Smoke, Fire and Heat Damage
- Permanent Mid-File Errors
- Snapped, Torn or Folded Tape
- Accidental Overwriting and Deletion
- Damage from Mechanical Tape Drive Failures
If your business needs to recover data from a damaged IBM 3490 tape, Secure Data Recovery Services provides a fast, reliable set of solutions with excellent security controls. We were the first tape data recovery provider to earn a SSAE 18 Type II Certification, and as one of the only recovery companies in the United States with a Certified Class 10 ISO 4 Cleanroom, we can safely treat any damaged data tape within a matter of days.
What to Do When an IBM 3490 Cartridge Fails
The 3490 family uses dense chromium dioxide data tape. Because of this, media contamination can make recovery extremely difficult and can cause read/write head damage, potentially resulting in permanent data loss. In order to prevent accidental damage, you should turn off your tape drive as soon as you notice signs of physical media damage. Do not attempt to repair your 3490 cartridges. Store your media in a safe environment and call Secure Data Recovery services to set up a media evaluation.
Our specialists will perform several tests to determine the extent of physical and logical damage, then provide you with an accurate price quote and turnaround estimate for your 3490 tape data recovery case. If you approve our quote, we will perform physical repairs in a certified Class 10 ISO 4 Cleanroom. Our engineers can then make a copy of your media in order to treat data corruption and other types of logical damage.
