Amid rampant speculation over the specifics of Apple’s next iPhone unveiling and the deafening silence coming out of Cupertino, industry insiders and market watchers have come to expect Apple to use the platform of its annual product refresh to unveil the new iPhone 5S.
According to numerous publications, September 10 is expected to be the day that Apple releases the specifics of its iPhone 5 refresh. Apple has declined to comment on the rumored date.
The Apple fall product refresh is the press conference/seminar hosted by the company to tout new offering and refreshed products in time for the upcoming holiday shopping season. With the Apple iPhone 5S unveiling during the September 10 announcement, Apple is expected to strengthen its position as the number two Smart Phone manufacturer behind Samsung.
The company is coming off a one-year decline in market share from 16.6% in the second quarter of last year compared to 13.1% market share in the second quarter of this year. If the iPhone 5S is an exciting product, expect Apple’s worldwide market share to grow considerably.
What’s New In The iPhone 5S And What Has Not Changed?
The new iPhone 5S is reported to have the same stylistic features as the iPhone 5 but the internal specifications have changed significantly. The product is said to have a quad-core PowerVR SGX544MP4 Graphics Processor, a 4-inch IGZO display, 2GB of internal RAM, the introduction of NFC (near-field communication), and a fingerprint scanner.
However, the specifications do not include an upgraded CPU as the iPhone 5S will continue to use the same Swift core found in the iPhone 5. While these reported specifications look good, they are only incremental updates over the existing iPhone 5, just as the iPhone 4S was compared to the iPhone 4.
The real story of the iPhone 5S specifications comes by way of the inclusion of NFC and the fingerprint scanner. The inclusion of these new items to the iPhone lineup indicates and new direction for Apple. As other companies continued to increase security offerings, Apple has always considered its operating systems and basic controls more than enough.
By including biometric scanning technology and no-contact payment technology Apple has shown that the company is willing to increase base-level security on its flagship product.
What Should Interested Consumers Do To Prepare For The iPhone 5S?
As with any device or piece of hardware that contains important or mission critical data, the most important step a consumer can take in the wait for the new iPhone 5S is to back up their data. Data loss in the form of corrupted file transfers from an older iPhone to the new iPhone 5S could wipe out years of contacts and other important data. Be sure that the current iDevice backs up data into the Apple iCloud and confirm that data deemed important is covered in the Apple supported back up service.
