The RAID 10 Setup

RAID 10 is a "hybrid" or nested RAID configuration. It is commonly referred to as a "stripe of mirrors".

A multiple RAID level is created by splitting the disks into sets. Within each set, one RAID configuration is applied, and then across the two sets, another RAID level is applied. Nested RAID configurations are denoted as RAID XY, or equivalently, RAID X+Y, or RAID X/Y. For RAID 10, X is 1 and Y is 0, so each set will have a RAID 1 configuration within it, and RAID 0 will be applied across the two sets.

It may be difficult to visualize this, so to illustrate, suppose you own 8 disks. The data is divided into "blocks", and these blocks are numbered 1, 2, 3, 4 and so on. We generally split the disks into two sets, so we will have 4 disks in each set. Here is what this will look like:

  • Contrast this with RAID 0+1, where the same RAID levels are used, but inverted

There is a relatively high efficiency cost to set up a RAID 10 system, but the advantages are enticing: there is a relatively high degree of fault tolerance and good performance. As many as four disks can fail in the setup illustrated above: as long as one disk remains in each set, the data is still intact. The striping also increases read and write performance. These advantages make RAID 10 a good option for high-load enterprise servers and database systems.

RAID 10 Data Loss

One of the leading causes of data loss in a RAID 10 setup is a double disk failure. Although the RAID setup illustrated above can support up to four disk failures, those four failures must be one disk from each set - that way, a mirror of the damaged data for each failed disk is still retained. However, if both disks from a single set fail, then actual data loss has occurred and data recovery becomes essential.

The likelihood of two disks from the same set simultaneously failing is relatively low, but cannot be neglected. The disks are usually identical, have been in use for the same amount of time, and the usage patterns are also similar. If one disks fails due to wear, another is likely to fail relatively soon.

However, multi-disk failure occurs more commonly when there is a single event that takes down several drives at once. This often happens in the case of a power surge, a faulty component, fire or water damage, or another similar event.

Due to the duplication of data, RAID 10 is relatively well-protected against physical failure. However, RAID 10 does not confer any protection against logical data problems, such as corruption, software errors, and accidental deletion.

Some common causes of RAID 10 data loss are:
  • RAID Controller Failure
  • Lost, Damaged, or Corrupted RAID Array Configuration
  • Accidental Formatting
  • Intermittent Drive Failure
  • Incorrect Drive Marking
  • Rebuild Errors
  • Addition of an Incompatible Drive
  • Hardware Conflict

What to Do If Your RAID 10 Array Fails?

  • Do not reboot: Simply power down the server/computer and the array. Rebooting can cause serious damage when a RAID array fails.

  • If you suspect mechanical failure, power down the array immediately: If a drive is making an unusual noise, such as clicking or grinding, power it off as soon as possible. Continuing to run a physically failed drive can cause irreparable damage to the platters where data is stored.

  • Do not run defragment or volume repair utilities on suspected failed drives: Utilities such as chkdsk, scandisk, and fsck are generally not intended for RAID repair. They are designed to solve very specific problems relating to the filesystem, and unless you are sure you have these problems, you should avoid running them at all costs. These operations involve moving and writing a lot of data, which can make the damage far worse.

    • Furthermore, the kinds of problems that these utilities are meant to fix can often exhibit themselves in cases where the actual cause of the original problem is different. Running these operations can be very dangerous!

  • Label the positions of all drives in the RAID array and mark the one that failed: People panic when they lose data, and in attempting to fix the situation, it happens surprisingly often that they will mix up the order of the drives or forget which ones failed. This is understandable - data loss can be highly stressful. But it can make data recovery more difficult when we lack such information, so please take care to label your drives as soon as you can.

    • Please note that drives in a RAID array are numbered starting from 0.

  • Log the events you observed that led to the failure: This will provide valuable information that will make the data recovery effort more likely to succeed.

    • Also please log all attempts you have made, if any, to remedy the problem and any consequences you observed.

  • Do not change the order of the drives in an array: When the situation is already dangerous, you run an extremely high risk of data loss if you alter the RAID configuration in any way.

  • Do not swap another disk into the array: This can also become catastrophic if done incorrectly. New disks have to be completely zeroed out before insertion, and it is crucial to follow the manufacturer's instructions when swapping. It is highly advisable not to perform this operation in any potential data loss scenario.

RAID 10 Recovery

Generally, data recovery from a RAID system is feasible, but the knowledge, time and resources that are required make RAID recovery the most technically demanding form of data recovery. RAID manufacturers differ vastly in their designs of the internal components and circuitry of their systems, and an in-depth knowledge of these designs is crucial for successful data recovery. But because manufacturers do not disclose this information, RAID recovery techniques require many years of development in order to determine which ones are the most effective.

Few people are properly equipped and experienced enough to perform RAID 10 recovery, and as such, this task should only be entrusted to the professionals. As one of the more complicated RAID setups, the recovery process is highly delicate. Mistakes can be costly - there is usually only once chance to do the recovery right. For this reason, we strongly recommend that you do not attempt to perform the RAID 10 recovery process on your own. We have the experience needed to ensure to the fullest extent possible that the recovery is successful.

Our RAID 10 data recovery services have been perfected over many years and we can boast one of the highest success rates in the country. If you lost data on your RAID 10 system, we can help - only we have the knowledge, tools, and resources that it takes to exceed your best expectations.

After receiving your RAID system, we will quickly assess the extent of the damage and connect you with an expert who can guide you on the best course of action for your specific situation.
